A secularist organization has launched a billboard campaign to encourage Catholics to "Quit the Church" due to the Roman Catholic Church's stance on the contraception mandate.
By Michael Gryboski ,
The
Madison, Wisconsin-based Freedom From Religion Foundation has put up
billboards, including a 14 x 48 foot one in Dallas-Ft. Worth, Texas earlier this month.
Sister
Mary Ann Walsh, director of media relations for the United States
Conference of Catholic Bishops, told The Christian Post that the
billboard campaign would not gain support."It is offensive, fortunately so offensive that serious people cannot take it seriously," said Walsh.
"Unfortunately, anti-Catholicism lies close to the surface in America. However, with critics like these, we must be doing something right."
In response to the many Catholic organizations and dioceses who that have sued the federal government over the HHS mandate on contraception coverage, the FFRF opted to erect billboards calling for people to leave the Catholic Church.
Follow us
The
foundation picked the Dallas-Ft Worth area for their large "Quit the
Church" billboard due to the Dioceses of Dallas and Fort Worth being
among those that have filed suit against the Obama administration."We don't think most Catholics, especially the 98 percent of Catholic women who use contraceptives at some point in their lives, support the bishops' war against contraception," said Dan Barker, FFRF co-president, in a statement.
"It's time for them to stop supporting an oppressive institution."
Jeff Field, director of Communications for the Catholic League, told CP that the foundation's efforts are being done because "they despise religion."
"Militant atheists, such as those at FFRF, are leading the charge of anti-Catholicism today. They claim that the bishops want to impose their dogma on all people. They couldn't be more wrong," said Field.
"Grant our institutions the same protections they have received all along and don't force them to provide services which are contradictory to our basic beliefs."
The "Quit the Church" billboards in Texas and elsewhere are not the only means through which FFRF is attempting to garner support for their efforts. FFRF has also widely syndicated a 30-second ad featuring former Saturday Night Live cast member Julia Sweeney.
"I'm a 'cultural Catholic,' I'm no longer a believer and I even wrote a play about it," said Sweeney in the ad, which will air on multiple cable channels during the weekend.
"Right now, Catholic bishops are framing their opposition to contraceptive coverage as a 'religious freedom' issue, but the real threat to freedom is the bishops."
Regarding the claims by some that the Catholic Bishops are opposed to women's advancement, Sr. Mary Ann Walsh told CP that outside of clerical positions Catholic institutions abound with female leadership.
"If you can put the theological issue of ordination of women off the table, you will find the Catholic Church has a long history of women in top positions," said Walsh.
"You'll find them today leading chanceries, schools, hospitals and other agencies of the Catholic Church. In the United States, women are credited with building the Catholic school and hospital systems."
The Freedom From Religion Foundation's ad campaign comes as the lawsuits by Catholic groups against the HHS mandate continue to be heard in court.
The Dallas-Ft. Worth billboard will remain up for a month. The same billboard was also posted in St. Louis, Mo., and Times Square in New York City.

We Need Help.
We need a computer (Laptop)
As most of you know we are doing evangelism work (preaching). I have a need for a computer to put video clips on you tube and my blog site. I feel this is a great way to spread the good news of Christ. I need to find a computer at a very low price due to our budget. I can't afford new ones, but would like for them to be fairly current. Hopefully Windows 7.

Last Night at Gloryland Gospel Church
We had a great service last night at Gloryland Gospel Church. Such a wonderful spirit of God. We had several to get in a prayer line for needs. One woman had a need for healing and God healed her right there. Thank God! God is worthy of all our praise. The church is praying for a date to have us in revival. My prayers are for God to bless this church and he will according to his word. Thanks Gloryland for having my wife and I.

Fathers Day Poem
FATHERS ARE WONDERFUL PEOPLE
Fathers are wonderful people
too little understood,
And we do not sing their praises
as often as we should...
And Father struggles daily
to live up to "his image"
As protector and provider
and " hero of the scrimmage"...
And perhaps that is the reason
we sometimes get the notion
That Fathers are not subject
to the thing we call emotion,
But if you look inside Dad's heart,
where no one else can see,
You'll find he's sentimental
and as "soft" as he can be
Fathers are just wonderful
in a million different ways,
And they merit loving compliments
and accolades of praise,
For the only reason Dad aspires
to fortune and success
Is to make the family proud of him
and bring them happiness...
And like our Our Heavenly Father,
he's a guardian and a guide,
Someone that we can count on
to be always on our side.
Another Story of Satan at Work
School Principal Pulls 'God Bless the USA' From Program to Avoid Offending 'Other Cultures'
A Coney Island principal's refusal to let students sing "God Bless the USA" at their graduation has sparked controversy at a school filled with proud immigrants, the New York Post reports. After kindergarteners at PS 90, the Edna Cohen School, spent months learning the patriotic Lee Greenwood ballad and practicing waving tiny American flags, principal Greta Hawkins walked in to a recent rehearsal, ordered a CD playing the song to be shut off, and told teachers to drop the song from the June 20 commencement program. "We don't want to offend other cultures," they quoted her as saying. Hawkins' edict stunned both staff and parents. "A lot of people fought to move to America to live freely, so that song should be sung with a whole lot of pride," said Luz Lozada, whose son is in kindergarten. The song has been sung at previous school events, and parents -- many of them immigrants from Pakistan, Mexico and Ecuador -- "love it," Lozada said. A teacher agreed: "It makes them a little goosebumpy and teary-eyed. I've never come across anyone who felt it insulted their culture." The Department of Education backed the principal's decision, saying Hawkins found the lyrics "too grown-up" for 5-year-olds and concurring that the lyrics were "not age-appropriate."

Pastors: You Need to Grow Too
By Eric Mason
Being a pastor can be one of the most enjoyable and fruitful roles to play in the scheme of God's redemptive story. It is this growth toward being more like Christ that drives what we do. We're driven to see the church grow, people grow, and gospel opportunities grow. However, if we're not careful, the most important area of growth can become neglected, our own spiritual growth.

Survey: Majority of Christians Hate Christian TV
Pastor David Wright, chief executive of DoersTV.com, polled his
channel's more than 100,000 Facebook fans to find out what they thought
of Christian TV -- and was shocked to discover the majority said they
hate it and do not watch it, the Christian Post reports.
Wright said 90 percent of the feedback to his poll was negative, and
comments by respondents indicated several major turn-offs about
Christian TV: too much begging for money and fundraising telethons,
false prosperity teachers manipulating people for donations, a lack of
quality programming, and a lack of integrity of the Christian leaders
being broadcast. Wright said he was "flabbergasted" by the responses. "I
kind of expected there would be those Christians who thought Christian
TV was too boring or not relevant for the times, but I never would have
imagined the disdain thousands of Christians have for Christian TV," he
said. "Unfortunately, the greed for money has replaced the need for
ministry among many of our ministers and Christian TV networks. ... We
can't have pastors indulging in sin and expect people not to be turned
off."

JCPenney Releases Father's Day Ad Featuring Two Gay Dads
JCPenney has released a Father's Day print ad featuring a real-life same-sex couple hugging their two young children, Yahoo! Finance reports. The ad reads: "What makes Dad so cool? He's the swim coach, tent maker, best friend, bike fixer and hug giver -- all rolled into one. Or two." Earlier this year, the retailer came under fire for its decision to employ openly gay talk show host Ellen DeGeneres as its spokeswoman. Conservative group One Million Moms criticized the retailer for abandoning traditional values, but JCPenney stuck with Ellen, saying in a statement that "Ellen represents the values of our company." One Million Moms released a statement on May 31 condemning JCPenney's new ad. "It is obvious that JCP would rather take sides than remain neutral in the culture war," the statement said. "JCP will hear from the other side so they need to hear from us as well. Our persistence will pay off! One day we will answer for our actions or lack of them. We must remain diligent and stand up for biblical values and truth. Scripture says multiple times that homosexuality is wrong, and God will not tolerate this sinful nature."
Obama Issues Gay Pride Month Proclamation
For the fourth straight year, President Obama has issued a proclamation recognizing June as Gay Pride Month, saying "more remains to be done" in advancing gay issues and for the first time acknowledging his support for gay marriage within a proclamation, Baptist Press reports. Obama's latest proclamation lists his achievements for the gay community, such as signing a repeal of the military's Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy and signing a hate crimes bill that encompasses "sexual orientation" and "gender identity." The proclamation reads: "Because we must treat others the way we want to be treated, I personally believe in marriage equality for same-sex couples. ... Moving forward, my administration will continue its work to advance the rights of LGBT Americans. ... I call upon the people of the United States to eliminate prejudice everywhere it exists and to celebrate the great diversity of the American people." Bob Stith of the Southern Baptist Convention's Task Force on Ministry to Homosexuals says Obama is wrong to assert that opposition to homosexuality equals prejudice. "President Obama again casts all those who have a genuine, biblically-based belief that homosexual acts are sin as haters," Stith said, adding that Obama framing the legalization of same-sex marriage as ridding the country of prejudice did not bode well for traditional Christians.
Court: Christian Photographer Can't Refuse Gay Ceremonies
Attorneys for a Christian wedding photographer say they will appeal a New Mexico court decision that ruled she violated anti-discrimination laws by refusing to photograph a lesbian commitment ceremony, the Religion News Service reports. "Americans in the marketplace should not be subjected to legal attacks for simply abiding by their beliefs," said Jordan Lorence of the Alliance Defense Fund, which is representing the photography studio. The controversy began in 2006 when Elaine Huguenin, co-owner of Elane Photography, refused to photograph a lesbian "commitment ceremony" because her Christian faith viewed marriage as a sacred union between one man and one woman. The May 31 decision by the New Mexico Court of Appeals upholds a lower court ruling in 2008 that places of public accommodation could not discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation. "The government cannot make people choose between their faith and their livelihood," Lorence said. "Could the government force a vegetarian videographer to create a commercial for the new butcher shop in town? American business owners do not surrender their constitutional rights at the marketplace gate."
